Go Further to Serve the Orphans and Widows in Zimbabwe

[ePrayer – Pray for partner Trinity]

eprayer20130920-c1

CEDAR’s partner Trinity in Zimbabwe used to operate as a Trust to strive for the rights of the widows and orphans in the HIV/AIDS affected families. Give thanks that they are recognised as a PVO (Private Voluntary Organization) in Sep 2013. In 2012 – 2013, Trinity assisted 137 children to attain their legal status. Some health centers release birth confirmation records at no charge as a result of the lobbying of Trinity. They are now exploring the needs of rural areas in other areas, and also expanding the project from being only legal consultation to income generation & skills training.

Pray for partner Trinity:

  • Pray for His guidance in the direction of Trinity. Pray that Trinity will be sensitive to the needs of the families and assist them to advocate for their rights. Pray that more government departments will be willing to provide free and convenient services
  • Pray for His provision. As most deprived families lack money to pursue their cases, Trinity needs more financial resources. Their most immediate need is a project vehicle and also funds to pay the salaries of their staffs.

President Election in Zimbabwe under Dispute

[ePrayer – President Election in Zimbabwe under Dispute]

eprayer20130822-n1

Robert Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe since independence from Britain in 1980, was sworn in as president today on 22 August, extending his 33-year rule of the country after winning the 31 July election. Although Southern African leaders endorsed the re-election of Mugabe, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network said that before Election Day the voter registration process was systematically biased against urban voters, disenfranchising up to a million people out of 6.4 million registered voters (15%). Western nations also questioned the credibility of this election.

Mugabe will continue his ‘indigenisation’ policy, redistributing wealth by forcing foreign-owned firms to sell at least 51% to black Zimbabwe. Trust that US and EU will not loosen the sanctions against Mugabe’s government. [REUTERS(1), REUTERS(2)]

Pray for the development of Zimbabwe:

  • Pray for peace, justice and good governance in Zimbabwe;
  • Pray that the ‘new’ government will concern for the needs of Zimbabwean people.

Churches in Zimbabwe are Mobilised to Care for HIV/AIDS Affected Families

[ePrayer – Pray for AIDS Care Programme in Zimbabwe]

eprayer20130808-c1

CEDAR’s partner Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT) mobilises local churches to care for HIV/AIDS orphans families, providing venues for conducting regular life skills learning to children and guardians’ self-help groups gathering. FACT also works with church pastors to provide weekly biblical teaching on responding to the challenges of vulnerable groups. One pastor of a partnering church has been recently transferred to another locale. This may hamper the commitment of that church to this caring scheme. FACT is engaging the church leaders and facilitating more Christians to support the ministry. Besides, HIV carriers are now confident to disclose their medical issues to family members as they get support from the supporting network formed between local churches and 50 HIV/AIDS affected families. The network often provides financial support to the HIV carriers so they have money to pay their medication bills.

Pray for AIDS Care Programme in Zimbabwe:

  • Pray that more church leaders and lay Christians will be mobilized to join the FACT’s work;
  • Give thanks that many HIV/AIDS affected families received financial resources. Pray for sustainable and positive outcomes.

Remember the Rights of HIV/AIDS Orphans in Zimbabwe

[ePrayer – Pray for the rights of HIV/AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe]

20130516_eprayer_c2

The prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe is high and affecting many families. Many widows and orphans are left without assistance and cannot exercise their rights to access to assistance or inheritance. CEDAR partner Trinity Project Trust is used to assist the poor who cannot produce the aforementioned legal documents to gain rightful access to their estates or resolve other property grabbing problems. From this July, they will try to tackle with the cultural practices (e.g. verbal confirmation is enough to confirm a marriage), the fear of witch craft (e.g. bring a baby out of her/his home only after 3 months) and other socio-cultural factors of Zimbabwean through counseling and advocacy.

Pray for the rights of HIV/AIDS orphans in Zimbabwe:

  • May God use this approach to make people aware of the importance of various kinds of registration;
  • Pray that partner can raise enough fund to implement the project.

Remember the Caring Service to HIV Affected Children in Zimbabwe

[ePrayer – Pray for HIV affected children in Zimbabwe]

20130207eprayer-n1

Praise the Lord, CEDAR has supported partner FACT’s child sponsorship over 10 years. 16 youth completed secondary school level, 7 have studied at polytechnic or vocational colleges, 4 are in universities. Partner has carried out SAVE model (‘S’ stands for safer sexual practices; ‘A’ stands for access to treatment; ‘V’ is voluntary testing and counselling services; ‘E’ focuses on empowerment) in combating AIDS for several years. Give thanks that the model has gradually got more affirmation among church leaders. However, the church support for HIV-infected/affected kids in some areas still need to increase. FACT needs to co-ordinate with the local churches there and will recruit 15 care-givers.

Pray for HIV affected children in Zimbabwe:

  • Thank God for the partnership between FACT and CEDAR to serve those HIV affected children and families in Zimbabwe for years, and that the children grow well;
  • Pray for God’s guidance and provision to partner’s ministry in different districts. Pray that more churches will respond and support to the need of HIV affected children and families.

Prospect | Dr CHAN Nim Chung

[Annual Report 2011-2012] Prospect

prospect

> Dr CHAN Nim Chung, Chief Executive

After the exposure monitoring trips and discussions in the past two years, we have finally chosen Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, India, Nepal, Myanmar and China to be the focus countries for our projects. We have since strengthened our partnership in these focus countries through cooperation and communication to promote our mutual capability on project operation and management to provide more appropriate and effective assistance to impoverished communities.

In recent years, the Chinese and Nepalese governments have loosened official restrictions on local Christian churches. In addition to reforms in the political process in Myanmar, there is a new turning point for the growth of Christian relief and development work in these countries. CEDAR hopes to seize this opportunity to seek furthering the cooperation of Hong Kong churches with overseas churches and Christian organisations. Project sites in the above six focus countries will become important platforms for Hong Kong churches to participate in appropriate response to global ministry in the practice of integral mission. Hong Kong churches can provide strong support in human and financial resources to these overseas partners engaged in frontline ministries. This way we can develop the partnership between different nations, regions, churches and organisations in better synergy.

As a member organisation of the Hong Kong Church Network for the Poor (the HKCNP), CEDAR will endeavor to mobilise local churches to work with frontline organisations, social enterprises and government, facilitating the development of district network for social concern among churches. We look forward to churches becoming the real neighbour to the poor, giving them timely, suitable and holistic care and assistance.

May God guide our way according to His will.
