Churches in Gengma Yunnan care for the Marginalised Communities

[ePrayer – Pray for the ministry in Gengma, Yunnan]

Deputy Director of Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Health expressed his appreciation to the staff of Gengma County Christian Council (Social Service) after attending the training session, commenting it’s practical and “down-to-earth” HIV/AIDS prevention training.

A grandfather residing in the rural village of Gengma, Yunnan lost his wife last year, leaving him and his little granddaughter alone. All these years his life is troubled by problems causing by his drug-addicted son, and now, he has an additional worry if he can raise his little granddaughter till she is grown-up. ‘I can no longer cut down the sugar cane by myself. I obtain some income from renting out my farm to others and also from being a watchman in an orange grove. I also plant some maze and rear chicken for living.’

Since 2007, CEDAR has organized ‘Integral Mission’ training for the Yunnan churches, encouraging them to walk with the poor and respond to the need of the impoverished people. Many churches then started to set up their “social service team” and regularly paid visits to the poor, orphan and widows, and the elderly in the communities. A lot of these marginalised families suffer from drug addict and HIV/AIDS problem. The grandfather mentioned above is among those that the Gengma church visit regularly. They listen to him, share his burdens and provide emotional and spiritual support. The church even arranges him to join a training on rearing chicken and hope such techniques can help him to earn a better living.

Besides visiting the impoverished households, CEDAR’s partner “Christian Council (Social Service) of Gengma Dai & Va Nationality Autonomous County” also organise HIV/AIDS prevention training at different churches and provide support for the youth migrant workers.

Pray for the ministry in Gengma, Yunnan:

  • Thank God for the meaningful service by the Gengma churches, that through them many impoverished people and marginalised families receive care and support;
  • Pray for the work in supporting the HIV/AIDS affected families and youth migrant workers, and that a lot more impoverished families will be blessed though the services of the local churches.

Pray for Church Empowerment Programme in Nepal

[ePrayer – Pray for the church empowerment in Nepal]

20130905-eprayer-c2

CEDAR’s partner United Mission to Nepal (UMN) has been working exclusively in Nepal since 1954. In its long history, UMN has always maintained two characteristics, serving Nepal with a united mission of people from many organisations, denominations and parts of the world in the name of Christ, alongside Nepali colleagues; and working with the aim of training Nepali people and building the capacity of Nepali organisations. UMN has integral mission as its core value, envisioning the fullness of life for all Nepali in six aspects – religious/ cultural, political/ economic, social/ communal, interpersonal/ psychological, material and ecological, to live healthy, dignified and hope-filled lives in community. UMN promotes cooperation between church and community in order to respond to the needs of grassroots people. CEDAR is now supporting a new programme of UMN. The programme targets to empower 2,000 churches and their leaders within 5 years who in turn will be catalyst to bring about holistic transformation in their communities or target groups.

Pray for the church empowerment in Nepal:

  • Pray that CEDAR and HK churches can learn more about partner’s approach, the country, as well as local churches context and environment;
  • Two of our co-workers will visit Nepal in late September. Pray for good communication and fellowship with local partners and Christian groups, and their safety as well.

Churches in Zimbabwe are Mobilised to Care for HIV/AIDS Affected Families

[ePrayer – Pray for AIDS Care Programme in Zimbabwe]

eprayer20130808-c1

CEDAR’s partner Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT) mobilises local churches to care for HIV/AIDS orphans families, providing venues for conducting regular life skills learning to children and guardians’ self-help groups gathering. FACT also works with church pastors to provide weekly biblical teaching on responding to the challenges of vulnerable groups. One pastor of a partnering church has been recently transferred to another locale. This may hamper the commitment of that church to this caring scheme. FACT is engaging the church leaders and facilitating more Christians to support the ministry. Besides, HIV carriers are now confident to disclose their medical issues to family members as they get support from the supporting network formed between local churches and 50 HIV/AIDS affected families. The network often provides financial support to the HIV carriers so they have money to pay their medication bills.

Pray for AIDS Care Programme in Zimbabwe:

  • Pray that more church leaders and lay Christians will be mobilized to join the FACT’s work;
  • Give thanks that many HIV/AIDS affected families received financial resources. Pray for sustainable and positive outcomes.

Concern for the Violence Against Women in Pakistan

[ePrayer – Pray for violence against women in Pakistan to cease]

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Praise God that good progress has been made so far on the Violence Against Women Prevention Project by partner CGDC. This project has set an example for churches in Pakistan to speak out on Violence Against Women (VAM) with a focus on promoting Christian family life and teaching people what the Bible says about domestic abuse. In the first 6 months, pastors in 4 churches were trained to counsel victims and deal with perpetrators; 31 field visits were conducted. A video documentary will be produced by this August, hope that it will be completed on time.

Pray for violence against women in Pakistan to cease:

  • Pray for the many visits and family counselling activities to be done;
  • Give thanks: on the First National Conference on VAW, delegates from 3 provinces participated and they found it informative and eye opening;
  • There are many requests for VAW sessions to be launched in other areas. Pray that many different district areas can join this project in the next phase.

The Letter from CEDAR | April 2013

Yunnan pastors map out the progress and achievement to evaluators on their social ministries in the past six years.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

In early March, CEDAR invited several experienced development workers to evaluate our six-year Church Mobilisation programme in Yunnan, China. Their findings and appreciation give us great encouragement.
