[ ‘SHARE’ Nov-Dec 2014 ] STEP INTO THE WORLD
Bangladesh’s literacy rate is less than 50%, and it is dangerous for border-area children to travel long distances to state-run schools in the cities. Since 1999, World Concern Bangladesh (WCB) as financially supported mountain area primary schools and provided training for teachers.
WCB also gives impoverished pupils extra support: teachers identify needy students and through home visits encourage them and follow up on their school attendance. WCB also holds Friday bible studies in some schools and with bible stories makes Christianity and biblical ethics more commonly known.
WCB now holds preschool classes in slums in Dhaka the capital, hiring girls from high schools and universities as instructors for 40 classes. Less than 25% of women are literate and it is not easy for them to receive higher education. WCB hopes the classes will both provide education to small children and financially help the instructors to continue their studies and fulfil their dreams.
Please support the children education programme in Bangladesh:
HK$175/month helps operate one preschool class, including subsidising teaching salaries and materials costs.
