[ePrayer – Pray for Solar energy in Myanmar]

eprayer20130920-c2

Six months ago 4 mothers from a CEDAR sponsored ‘Protection & Reintegration of Children Programme’ in Mon State was the first batch in the country to be selected to join a renowned 6-month training on solar engineering in India. Despite much difficulty and adjustments, they have successfully completed the training and returned this week. A Press Conference was held with speeches from ministerial offices, Consulate of India Embassy and sharing by the women. Thank God that He has protected their families during the time they were away & that they had overcome all challenges, obstacles in living in a new environment, new place, new food and languages! May God greatly use them and bless their villages. Solar panels and equipment will arrive Myanmar next month and will be set up in the main TWT village.

Pray for Solar energy in Myanmar:

  • Praise God that children will have light to study in the night; TWT is becoming a model village in the country and the whole village will be lightened up!
  • Pray that more and more villages can have access to lighting and electricity.

Remember the Launch of Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Uttarakhand, India

[ePrayer – Pray for the disaster relief and preparedness work in India]

eprayer20130822-c1

Early monsoon rains caused massive flooding and landslides in northern India’s Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh states in June 2013, affecting tens of thousands of people. CEDAR’s partner EFICOR reached the affected areas immediately to conduct assessment and provide emergency relief. All the relief materials have now reached the warehouses and are being transported by smaller vehicles to reach the affected villages. Up to 1 August, EFICOR has covered 1,622 families. Pray that the whole relief operations will be completed by the end of August.

Our partner EFICOR is now looking at the possibility of implementing a long-term community based programme on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which includes building the capacity of the community on preparedness and mitigation.

Pray for the disaster relief and preparedness work in India:

  • Pray for smooth completion of the relief operation and the safety of frontline workers;
  • Pray for God’s guidance and provision on EFICOR’s long-term DRR programme in flood-affected areas in Uttarakhand State. Pray that those targeted villages and communities will have better disaster preparedness.

Urge Nuclear Disarmament on 68th Anniversary of Hiroshima Atomic Bombing

[ePrayer – Pray for Global Nuclear Disarmament]

First Phase Digital

Security is based on people’s welfare and not on military annihilation, UN said, marking the 68th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and later Nagasaki which together killed more than 400,000 people. ‘We are united in countering the erroneous view that security is achieved through the pursuit of military dominance and threats of mutual annihilation,’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony. There is a ‘surge of new interest’ in nuclear disarmament based largely on an increasing awareness of the horrific humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. UN has made nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation a top priority. Disarmament frees up resources which could be channelled to address major global threats, including poverty, hunger and disease.

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) bans all nuclear explosions in all environments, for military or civilian purposes. It was adopted by the General Assembly in September 1996 but has not yet entered into force. China, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, Pakistan and the United States have yet to ratify it. [UN News]

Pray for Global Nuclear Disarmament:

  • Pray that the governments of the nations will put all their efforts to improve the people’s welfare and create the peaceful atmosphere. Pray that they will give up the military competition and nuclear weapons.
  • Pray that the UN can rope in the nations to sign, ratify and implement the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

Remember Remote Villages in India Orissa States

[ePrayer – Pray for the community development projects in India]

20130725_eprayer_c2

Partner EFICOR, in partnership with SCOPE, launched community development projects aiming at sustainable livelihood and capacity building in villages in Orissa, India. It is glad to note reduction in seasonal migration (poor peasants getting to work far from home after the harvest season) and there is increase in crop yield and household income. Local leaders in a village have got involved in resuming water supply. Treatments with medicine and operation by an eye hospital nearby are extended to the villagers. SCOPE staff is graceful in receiving various trainings in skills and knowledge fit for the projects.

Pray for the community development projects in India:

  • Pray for further reduction in seasonal migration;
  • Village children used to quit their studies in response to parents’ command to collect plants for making wines and cigarettes. Pray for these families!

Appeal for Emergency Relief to Flooding in Northern India

india-flooding-20130629

Early monsoon rains have caused massive flooding and landslides in northern India’s Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh states since mid-June 2013, affecting tens of thousands of people. The state of Uttarakhand in India suffered maximum damage. More than 1,000 people have reportedly died with many more missing. Damage to bridges and roads left over 70,000 pilgrims and tourists trapped in various places.

On 24 June, CEDAR’s partner EFICOR has sent an assessment team to Uttarakhand. According to latest assessment, the affected communities need immediate help on food supplies, temporary sheltering, hygiene and health. Livelihoods have been destroyed and restoring would take at least a year. Fresh landslides and road blocks hamper the transportation and people are left without any food at homes.

indiafloodstory1 Living by the side of Mandakini river for decades in Silli Village, Viseswari Devi (a widow) never expected that her house would be washed away by flood. Her husband had built the house from his earnings and she has been living on his meagre pension. When the flood came suddenly she had to run to safety and there was no one around to help her move her belongings. Everything were lost.
indiafloodstory2 Gopal Singh owned a teashop in Ganurpani near Kedarnath. His two school going sons Ankit and Rohit were helping him in his business. He and his sons ran to the forest for safety when the flood came. Searching for food and water in the forest, the children consumed poisonous flowers and both died in the forest. While trying to seek help to save his sons he found others also battling for their lives. He left his two dead sons to help out others and providing them with water. Gopal Singh shocked at the lash flood said ‘It is unlucky for my family and others who lost their loved ones.’

From now on till the end of August, EFICOR conducts the relief operation in the worst affected district of Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts targeting 3,000 most needy families in the emergency response phase. The target beneficiaries will provide with food and non food materials such as rice, wheat flour, dal, cooking oil, salt, sugar, tea leaf, blankets, sleeping mat, bed sheet, hygiene kits, kitchen utensils and mosquito nets to sustain themselves during this time of devastation and help the family to restore their lives to normalcy. Priority will be given to woman headed households, widows, disabled, orphans and old age people.
