A farmer could only grow crops with the help of a fine weather, the fertile land, and the technique he/she possesses. Sadly, the weather is often against men’s will, and its impact reaches beyond the immediate food scarcity; the inability to store crops and seeds also hampers the subsequent farming activates. Unfortunately, the El noir in the past 3 years have caused severe drought in multiple eastern African countries, and a tremendous amount of people are suffering from famine, especially for countries like Zimbabwe, where over 65% of its population survives on farming.

CEDAR and Partner Working in Flash Flood Areas in Zimbabwe

Last year, the El Niño caused a drought in Zimbabwe that starved 4 million people; but since December, they have experienced constant heavy rain and even hurricanes last month that destroyed the homes of close to 2,000 families. The situation is still grim despite the relief efforts by the local government and organizations, including the ones supported by CEDAR.

Emergency Appeal: CEDAR and IA Respond to the South Sudan Refugee Crisis in Northern Uganda

Increasing numbers of South Sudanese are fleeing to northern Uganda to escape escalating violent conflict in their country. A total of 24,277 South Sudanese refugees were received in Uganda between the 25th and 31st January 2017 alone. The Human Rights Commission have condemned violations in South Sudan, calling for swift action to avert genocide. Integral Alliance (IA) has launched a Disaster Response for the worsening refugee crisis in northern Uganda. Responding Members committed to maximising their direct disaster response now, as well as considering their longer term approach, especially in the area of livelihoods.

Recovering with the Haitians after the Hurricane

Ever since Haiti experienced the hurricane in October last year, CEDAR has partnered with the fellow members of the Integral Alliance (IA) including Food for the Hungry, Medair, MTI, and World Concern Haiti, and supported their humanitarian efforts in getting the disaster-stricken Haitians back on track.
