25 August, 4 months after the earthquake in Nepal on 25 April, Tang (a member of CEDAR Relief Team) came back a week ago to report on the current state of Nepal after the earthquake.
Four years after South Sudan became the world’s newest country, its civil war has reached horrific levels of violence. Between April and June, government forces, together with associate militia, carried out an aggressive offensive in the north. Despite meeting little resistance in many areas – only women, children, and the elderly remained in most villages – troops killed civilians, torched homes, and beat, raped, and abducted women. At least 100,000 people have been displaced and untold numbers are left suffering.

At least 493 people are reported dead in six countries after monsoon rains and tropical Cyclone Komen caused severe flooding in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan, India, Nepal and Vietnam. An estimated 55,000 homes have been destroyed, with the media reporting one million people displaced (The Guardian; CNN).
How old are children supposed to be to have enough ability to decide for their own living, to take part in the social affairs and to voice their opinions? According to the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child is entitled to enjoy the basic freedom and all the rights that are endowed with human beings, including survival rights, protection rights, development rights and participation rights. The participation rights mean that children can express their own viewpoints, freely develop their own thinking and beliefs, take part in associations and peaceful assembly, and receive a variety of appropriate information.

However, the monsoon together with the cyclone “Komen” this year has brought widespread devastation in India, Myanmar, Pakistan and Vietnam leaving more than 300 people dead in the region.
