Join in Global Efforts to End Poverty

[ePrayer – Pray for global efforts to end poverty]

POVERTY-CHILDREN IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The theme of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty for 17 October 2013 is ‘working together towards a world without discrimination: Building on the experience and knowledge of people in extreme poverty’ The progress in reducing poverty world-wide has been uneven. Although some regions experience poverty reductions, in many countries poverty has been on the rise, especially among women and children. After the first UN Decade for Poverty Eradication (1997-2006), the second UN Decade (2008-2017) sets ‘Full employment and decent work for all’ as the theme for the Decade. Its particular focus is given to employment and decent work, including youth employment, the working poor, social protection in particular to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in the light of the current global crises, support for sustainable enterprises, gender equality, standards and rights at work, and social dialogue. [UN News]

CEDAR is calling churches and Christians to join EXPOSED during the week of 14 to 20 October, making appeals to the church, business and governments to operate with integrity and advocate an end to corruption which is a huge barrier to ending extreme world poverty. Please click here  for more details.

Pray for global efforts to end poverty:

  • Remember the needs and situations of the poor especially those vulnerable and disadvantaged groups including women and children ;
  • Pray for good progress made in implementing internationally agreed development goals ;
  • Pray also for churches and Christians worldwide to care for the poor together.

The Violence in Myanmar Bringing Negative Impact on Children

[ePrayer – Pray for Myanmar’s Rakhine State]

Valerie Amos Visits Myanmar

Since June 2012, Rakhine State in Myanmar has been the site of inter-communal violence and caused tens of thousands of people displaced. The latest wave of violence broke out on 29 September in the southern town of Thandwe subsequently spread to several townships. Deaths have been reported, along with the destruction of some 110 homes. It also caused a new wave of displacement of families and added to the fears of those displaced last year. UNICEF is concerned that displacement puts children at greater risk of family separation and domestic violence, they miss out on schooling and too frequently they experience physical and emotional damage. Besides, the polarization resulting from ongoing inter-communal violence could stall or put the many important reform processes currently underway in Myanmar at risk, with negative repercussions for all of Myanmar’s children. Therefore, peace-building and reconciliation activities must be prioritized in view of children’s rights and future. [UNICEF]

Pray for Myanmar’s Rakhine State :

  • Pray for an end to the violence in the areas and reconciliation between different groups;
  • Remember those children and families which are affected and displaced due to the violence;
  • Pray also for protection of the children’s rights and future.

Remember the Migrant Workers in N. Thailand

[ePrayer – Pray for migrant workers in N. Thailand]

eprayer20131017-c1

Our partner’s Mekong Migrant Foundation (MMF) reaches out to migrant workers in need through providing different supports such as legal support to Burmese migrant workers on issues related to work permits & registration, processing labour disputes and reconciliation. MMF has been very busy recently working on a case which involved over 200 migrant workers at a garment factory in Mae Sai. Give thanks that most of the workers recovered their unpaid wages, passports, and work permits from their employer. During last year there has been more cooperative effort between MMF and the local Labor Protection and Welfare Office.

Pray for migrant workers in N. Thailand:

  • Pray that a number of suggestions related to migrant workers’ interests and rights that MMF gave to the Labour Protection and Welfare Office will be considered and adopted, e.g. related official department should have a translator to strengthen the communication with migrant workers;
  • Remember MMF as they provide different supports to the migrant workers easing their difficulties.

Pray for Christians and Churches in Nepal

[ePrayer – Pray for Christians and Churches in Nepal]

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Give thanks that our two co-workers safely returned from a fruitful trip in Nepal. The Nepali Christians and churches are growing, becoming more organised and visible, and starting to give more attention to the needy in their own community. Collaborating with seminary schools, our partner UMN develops a curriculum of Integral Mission course to train up facilitators sent from local churches. A number of trained facilitators organized sewing classes in their community, which are creative ways of giving care and support to needy people.

Pray for Nepali churches and Christians:

  • Pray for God’s protection and strength in those Christians facing persecution from their family members and own community;
  • Pray for the progress in developing a good curriculum for the Integral Mission course;
  • Pray for wisdom in the church leaders and facilitators that they can find necessary resources to respond to local needs and concerns.

The Letter from CEDAR | October 2013

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

When we think of ‘poverty alleviation’ we may have the impression that it is the ‘rich’ initiating to help the ‘poor’. When I first left Hong Kong 33 years ago, I met some friends from Africa and India, and learned about their ministries. I realized that they had already developed many mission work and social ministries themselves. They were indeed not just recipients of aid. That started in me a lot of respect and appreciation for our friends in different countries.

Quake Victims in Pakistan Wait for Help

[ePrayer – Pray for the quake victims in Pakistan]

eprayer20131003-n1

On 24 September, a 7.7 scale quake hit the mountainous south-western province of Baluchistan, Pakistan, causing more than 500 dead. A local partner of Tearfund UK, one of our long-term working partners is assessing aid needs. The quake flattened houses ‘as far as the eye can see’, according to one witness. Hundreds of people have been injured amid the collapse of buildings made from mud and bricks. Rescue efforts are underway but are being hampered by the remoteness of the affected region and disruption to transport links. A powerful 7.2-magnitude after-shock hit southwest Pakistan again on 28 Sep. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue teams are still searching for people trapped under their homes. Thousands of people have been made homeless as mud houses have collapsed and are sitting in the open waiting for help. Many villages in remote areas have still not been reached by the Pakistan’s army. [Tearfund UK]

Pray for the quake victims in Pakistan:

  • Please pray for those affected and that help gets to them as soon as possible;
  • Integral Alliance* has been watching the situation closely. Pray that God will make a way to provide the relief assistance.

* Integral is a global alliance of 18 Christian relief and development agencies, working together to present a more effective response to poverty worldwide. CEDAR is one of the member agencies.
