Praise to Peace Agreement between KIO and Myanmar Government

[ePrayer – Pray for Kachin community in Myanmar]

eprayer20130627-c2

The Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) signed a tentative peace agreement with the Myanmar government in late May, the last of the 11 major ethnic armed groups to do so since 2011. Key issues are yet to discuss including how to develop an equitable peace economy and proper regulation and management of Kachin’s rich natural resources. CEDAR partner KLCC has been taking care of displaced families who take shelter at church compounds, school hostel and displaced camps.

Pray for Kachin community in Myanmar:

  • Pray that the peace agreement will secure lasting peace in the country.
  • Pray for God’s provision as KLCC start to secure new land to settle displaced families in Government allocated area.
  • Pray that God to raise up HK churches/Christians to partner with CEDAR to respond to needs in Kachin State.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale on 20 April struck Lushan County in Yaan, Sichuan, promptly bringing back the memory of Wenchuan quake five years ago. However, the public media soon turn their focus on whether HKSAR government should grant China 100 million HKD relief fund and the integrity of relief and development agencies. Also many people said, ‘I would not donate any of my money to this relief work.’ These made a huge contrast with the past active response of Hong Kong people to emergency relief, concern for the hardships and needs of victims and touching stories with compassion.

Bangladesh and Myanmar Brace for Cyclone Mahasen

[ePrayer – Pray for the cyclone affected communities in Bangladesh and Myanmar]

20130516_eprayer_n1

Bangladesh and Myanmar are bracing for Cyclone Mahasen, a storm which could affect millions in the region. According to OCHA, a red storm alert remains in effect for Mahasen, just east-northeast of Sri Lanka, now moving northwards across the Bay of Bengal towards both countries. Set to reach land on 16 May, the storm is expected to strike just south of the Bangladesh port city of Chittagong, but could, depending upon its final trajectory, bring life-threatening conditions for millions of people in northeast India, Bangladesh and Myanmar’s Rakhine State, OCHA warned on 12 May. It was predicted that Myanmar will have rain and thunderstorm on 15 May, followed by increasing wind and rain, as well as flash flooding later.

Aid agencies in Myanmar say heavy rain and mudslides could bring difficult conditions to about 140,000 displaced people across Rakhine state, mostly Rohingya. Up to 45,000 displaced people living in low-lying areas in Sittwe have been identified as the most vulnerable to cyclone Mahasen. Some have begun to be moved to higher ground. [IRIN]

Pray for the cyclone affected communities in Bangladesh and Myanmar:

  • Pray that Cyclone Mahasen would be weakened;
  • Pray for God’s protection to those people and communities who are being threatened by the coming cyclone;
  • Pray that tens of thousands of refugees who have already had so much troubles and suffering would be protected by the Lord and have peace
  • Pray that local governments and NGOs will have good preparation and coordination on mitigating the risk of the cyclone.

New Opportunities for Post-conflict Resettlement in Myanmar

[ePrayer – Pray for the Myanmar resettlement project]

eprayer20130404-c1

In the past few decades, there were continuous conflicts between the Karen and Burmese government army in the mountainous areas in Mon State, causing countless deaths and injuries. A year ago, the Burmese government went through a big reform and ceased the fire, bringing peace to Karen people. CEDAR supports local partner to implement post-conflict resettlement project there.

Give thanks that 4 ladies from a protection and resettlement programme in Mon State were selected to spend 6 months in India to receive training on solar engineering! They are the first group in the country to receive this training opportunity. Three agricultural experts will carry out a habitat assessment and data analysis to provide discussion and develop action plans on watershed management and agroforestry to 4 project villages in Mon State.

Pray for the Myanmar resettlement project:

  • Pray for the ladies’ adjustment, time of learning and their families back home.
  • Pray that through the exchange and training local villagers and leaders can result in a blueprint of how best to protect and improve the water quality and other natural resources in the watershed.
  • Pray for partner’s logistical arrangement and coordination with local leadership and related authorities.

MFDC Agricultural Training Brings Hope to Farmers in Myanmar

[ePrayer – Pray for the farming and demonstrating project in Myanmar]

20130221_eprayer_c2

Give thanks for a successful completion of a two- week Agricultural Training attended by 25 farmers, two weeks field visit and a project evaluation by CEDAR Agricultural Consultant Mr Donn Armstrong. This time the training focused on growing of dry season crops, animal production and practical visits to commercial vegetable growers, flower growers, pig breeding and finishing unit and duck farms. The evaluation and field visits show that there was a good adoption of the ideas and principles promoted by previous course trainees in their area.

Pray for the farming and demonstrating project in Myanmar:

  • Pray that farmers can practice what they learned and know how to care for the soil and to rest one seventh of their land each year. (Seven Year Rest Crop Rotation)
  • Pray for the future long term development plans for the farming and demonstration farm. There is need to increase planting to give sustainable annual income.
  • Pray for upcoming discussion with partner based on recommendations from the evaluation report.
