Remember the Launch of Disaster Risk Reduction Project in Uttarakhand, India

[ePrayer – Pray for the disaster relief and preparedness work in India]

Early monsoon rains caused massive flooding and landslides in northern India’s Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh states in June 2013, affecting tens of thousands of people. CEDAR’s partner EFICOR reached the affected areas immediately to conduct assessment and provide emergency relief. All the relief materials have now reached the warehouses and are being transported by smaller vehicles to reach the affected villages. Up to 1 August, EFICOR has covered 1,622 families. Pray that the whole relief operations will be completed by the end of August.

Our partner EFICOR is now looking at the possibility of implementing a long-term community based programme on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) which includes building the capacity of the community on preparedness and mitigation.

Pray for the disaster relief and preparedness work in India:

  • Pray for smooth completion of the relief operation and the safety of frontline workers;
  • Pray for God’s guidance and provision on EFICOR’s long-term DRR programme in flood-affected areas in Uttarakhand State. Pray that those targeted villages and communities will have better disaster preparedness.

Disaster Risk Reduction Central to Post-2015 Development Process

A UN report outlining a new framework to build on the anti-poverty targets known as the MDGs was written to drive five major transformational shifts, including a transition from ‘reducing’ to ‘ending’ extreme poverty, leaving no one behind; putting sustainable development at the core of the development agenda; and forging a new global partnership based on cooperation, equity and human rights. The new framework focuses on assisting the poorest and most marginalised, a disproportionate number of whom are women, and puts reducing disaster risk centre stage in the Post-2015 Development Agenda debate. The report said no one is more vulnerable than people in poverty to face challenges by desertification, deforestation and overfishing and these are less able to cope with floods, storms, and droughts. Natural disasters can pull them into a cycle of debt and illness, to further degradation of the land, and a fall deeper into poverty. [UN News]

  • Pray that people in poverty can be empowered to adapt and cope with natural disasters.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

An earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale on 20 April struck Lushan County in Yaan, Sichuan, promptly bringing back the memory of Wenchuan quake five years ago. However, the public media soon turn their focus on whether HKSAR government should grant China 100 million HKD relief fund and the integrity of relief and development agencies. Also many people said, ‘I would not donate any of my money to this relief work.’ These made a huge contrast with the past active response of Hong Kong people to emergency relief, concern for the hardships and needs of victims and touching stories with compassion.

Ethiopia Tearfund Drought Rehabilitation and Community Development Project

The “Horn of Africa” which refers to the Eastern part of the Continent has been seriously affected by climate change in recent years. Drought often occurs and the local people who rely heavily on pasturing and farming have suffered a lot. In the Borena zone,Southern Ethiopia, most families are pastoralists and they were made poor and vulnerable by the recurrent drought. They did not have enough food for themselves and there is not enough pasturing grass for their livestock. As a result, livestock becomes weak or die. For many years pastoralists do not have the ability to prepare and store food in order to survive through future droughts, making daily lives very difficult.

CEDAR has supported Tearfund a drought relief project in Oct – Dec 2011 in the Borena zone of Ethiopia. Following that, in partnership we provide assistance to 7,000 poor and vulnerable households in the area of rehabilitation with project interventions focus on improving local’s livelihoods such as restocking of livestock, income diversification through introduction and promotion of high yielding agricultural inputs, construction of water schemes for human and livestock consumption, promoting saving and credit culture through organizing Self-Help Groups. Formation and strengthening of Cooperatives with the primary aim to promote trading & marketing of livestock as well as to explore alternative income sources. Moreover, awareness raising on the right knowledge of HIV/AIDS will be dealt in the project.  This can help the people in Borena zone to recover from the negative impact of drought as well as to enhance their ability to fight against drought or climate change in the future.

Bangladesh World Concern Disaster Risk Reduction Project

Bangladesh is geographically located in a disaster prone area. Natural disasters are common phenomenon and occur in a regular basis. The present threat of climate change and global warming is a red alert of the country. The frequency and intensity of many existing hazards is increasing while some of new hazards may take place. CEDAR sponsors World Concern to reduce the impact of natural disasters by enhancing life security and building capacity of the vulnerable people through training and skill development.

Besides providing disaster mitigation training to the villagers and stakeholders, the project would also raise the villagers’ awareness on protection of environment. Participants would be trained about direct and indirect impact of climate change. They would also be taught about ways to reduce impact of disasters which would restore the environment simultaneously, e.g. construction of embankment and shelter, tree plantation, maintenance of water system and water sources.
