Week 6: Busyness is Not an Excuse

As Lent is coming to an end this year, it’s our hope to have aided you in the journey of loving God, one another, and the land with this “Reconciling with the Land” ePrayer series, through the promotion of mindful uses of resources and ending our habits that would exploit the environment God has given us. However, taking care of the land is not a festive activity! We shall never neglect the consequences of our actions on the environment at any given time, no matter how busy we might be. Our partner, SATHI, and the slum community in Bangladesh, set an example for us in loving the land daily.

Using Local Resources to Transform Communities

In response to the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh and Myanmar, CEDAR and other Integral Alliance members are in the process of providing emergency relief to the displaced. Amidst emergencies and crises, outside help is much needed, such as food aid and medical supply, to provide life-saving help to the affected. But when it comes to development work, the most important changes are brought about by the community itself, using its own resources.

South Asia Floods: The Disaster that Didn’t Make Headlines

Incessant rainfalls in South Asia have triggered massive floods and landslides, destroying farmlands, houses and roads, as well as killing innocent lives. It is estimated that up to 41 million people are affected in India, Nepal and Bangladesh, where over a million people are displaced. Survivors are experiencing food and water shortages, and humanitarian workers fear the outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Northwestern Bangladesh Citizens Finding Ways to Combat Disasters

Disaster prevention in high risk areas is often, if not always, as important as emergency relief efforts. CEDAR’s partner, Lutheran Aid to Medicine in Bangladesh (LAMB), has been promoting social health and development in northwestern Bangladesh for the past 3 years. They strengthened the area’s disaster responses to mitigate damages together with local churches and resident networks.
