In the worst case, some women in the countryside had to gain permission from their husbands and in-laws for things as trivial as leaving the house, hence they were mostly bound to the kitchens and farms.

We all have our new year wishes in 2017, and praying for a better and more peaceful world is often an afterthought preceded by wishing a better life for ourselves. It was understandable as peacefulness comes much easier to us than to the Syrians living in Aleppo, the battleground of multiple military groups that had just agreed to cease fire recently in last December.

Liberating Female’s Body and Soul from Genital Mutilation

A mere thought of the procedure of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), where a woman’s labia and clitoris are completely or partially removed, causing her virginal opening to be largely covered by the healing scar tissues, casts no doubt on the brutality of such practice. It is further heart breaking to think that the procedure was done to “ensure” pre-marital puberty. Places such as Ethiopia traditionally practices FGM where countless females were damaged both physically and mentally, with the resulting increased birth complication risks and pain during sexual intercourse.

A call to the next World Health Organization’s Director General to work for a Global Treaty on the Human Right to Health

At the 70th annual World Health Assembly in May 2017, member states will vote in a new director general for the World Health Organization (WHO-DG), who will take office on 1 July 2017.

Currently there are six candidates for the post, four from Europe, and one each from Africa and Asia. They will face a tough task in proving to the world that the WHO is still competent in delivering global health, particularly given the criticism it received after 11,000 people died during the Ebola outbreak.
