The recent strong series of earthquakes affecting vast areas in Myanmar, Japan, and Ecuador have raised global concerns.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit Monywa, an area in Northwest Myanmar, on April 13th, which could be felt by parts of India and China [1]. Due to the local new-year, detailed reports were not given by the Myanmar media. Our programme officer contacted the local partners immediately and had thankfully found them to be safe, together with the project beneficiaries. We will closely monitor the status of the event.
Aftershocks up to the magnitude of 5 were experience by Japan after the strong earthquake [2]. Some deaths by deep vein thrombosis were reported due to people seeking shelters in cars [3]. We were notified by some Hong Kong missions that their missionaries are currently contacting and organizing disaster relief efforts with local churches. Hong Kong churches have also sent counseling teams.
Ecuador had experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on April 16th [4] where President Correa said that it was the most serious natural disaster experienced by the country in 67 years. The death count has increased to 480 as of April 19th. Though the epicenter of the Ecuador earthquake is deeper underground, the subpar constructions have caused devastating damages to the cities, including the tourist city Manta. Coastal areas including Canoa, Esmeraldas, and the Jama Canton had been virtually levelled [5].
Strong quakes were reported besides Myanmar, Japan, and Ecuador in areas such as Afghanistan [6], Vanuatu [7], Guatemala [8], and Tonga [9].
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging. (Psalms 46:1-3)
Pray for the world:
- Pray for the rescue of the trapped, the healing of the wounded, and the comfort of the ones who lost their loved ones, that they could experience the ever-present help.
- Pray for the frontline rescuers to carry out God’s grace, also pray for their safety.
- Integral Alliance (CEDAR is one of the member agencies) is planning emergency relief efforts for Ecuador. Pray for God’s guidance and provision so the victims could be appropriately supported.
