Ecuador Quake Relief Work Calling for Your Immediate Support

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has hit Ecuador on April 16, following up by a 6.1 magnitude aftershock on April 20. Till now, the disaster has already caused over 600 deaths, 12,000 injured, as well as about 30,000 victims seeking emergency shelter.

Member Institutions of Integral Alliance (IA)*, including Norwegian Mission Alliance, MAP International and Tearfund UK, who have been supporting community development in Ecuador continuously, have already sent their teams to assess local conditions as well as providing emergency relief support. Norwegian Mission Alliance has reported that the damaged area is huge, and rescue teams might not be able to reach all of them. It is estimated that death numbers will continue to rise. Norwegian Mission Alliance plans to provide assistance to 3 of the provinces in Manabí and Esmeraldas, and will coordinate with the local government.

Another member institute, MAP International, has community development projects in Ecuador in the past 25 years. After the recent earthquake, they have visited quake-affected areas in the country, recorded and assessed the damage condition. Furthermore, they also obtained information from the local government that what the country needed the most now is medical supplies that have a longer shelf life.

Member institute, Tearfund UK, works with their partner, Peace and Hope, which has office set in the worst-conditioned areas. They said that victims need clean water, food, washroom, cooking utensils as well as medical supplies. Peace and Hope has already started their relief work right after the earthquake, and are now occupied by planning and deploying daily necessities to quake victims. They have also sent particular support to remote areas, such as Canoa, Portoviejo, Manta and Babahoyo.

CEDAR, as a member institute of IA, will support emergency relief to earthquake victims through IA:

  • to deliver food and shelters
  • to provide medicines and medical support
  • to provide water filters and new modular latrines
  • to provide post-trauma counselling

We call for your immediate response in reaching out to the quake-affected communities in Ecuador.
