Urgent Help Needed as Cyclone Pam Sweeps through Vanuatu!

On 13 March, Cyclone Pam, a Category Five storm, swept through the Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu. In the capital of Port Vila, about 90 percent of the housing has been destroyed. Communications infrastructure, power and water supplies, as well as medical facilities are all seriously damaged, affecting at least half the population.

Due to disrupted communications in areas outside of the capital, an accurate assessment of the disaster situation, especially in the badly hit southern part of Vanuatu, is not yet available. This, together with the persistent rain brought by the cyclone and the potential floods and landslides, will likely see an increase in the number of affected.

TEAR Fund New Zealand (TFNZ), a member of Integral Alliance (IA)*, has sent staff to Island of Efate and Island of Tanna to assess damage and needs. They will first partner with local organisations to distribute emergency supplies to the affected, and then assist local people with future rehabilitation based on the assessment result.

Almost 80 percent of the population relies on farming to support their families, pay for children’s education and medical expenses. Unfortunately, Cyclone Pam has swept away everything and left them with nothing.
